Rap music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight was put under arrest and jailed Wednesday after he punched his girlfriend and threatened her with a knife. He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence, Las Vegas police officials said.
The 43-year-old founder of the Death Row Records is also facing two drug offenses stemming from another run-in with the law when police officers found ecstasy and the prescription narcotic Hydrocodone on him.
“Suge” was jailed at Clark County Detention Center and he had to remain there for at least 12 hours beginning from his arrest at about 7 a.m. as a standard requirement for domestic violence cases. Knight posted his $19,000 bond and left the detention center Wednesday evening. His first court appearance was scheduled for September 26 in Las Vegas Justice Court.
The violent rap mogul was handcuffed and put under arrest at 6:40 a.m. on a street near the Las Vegas Strip. According to his girlfriend of three years, Knight punched her in the head as they were quarrelling in the vehicle. The unidentified girlfriend grabbed the steering wheel and caused the car to stop so she could get out. She managed to run away with Knight following her.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a domestic violence call. At the scene they found Knight standing over his girlfriend and threatening her with a knife. He was put under arrest and his girlfriend was taken to a hospital in close proximity.
Marion “Suge” Knight, who also promoted Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur, isn’t at his first run-in with the law. In 1996 he went to prison after violating his probation from an assault case. He was driving the car in which Tupac Shakur was shot. Knight was also wounded then.
He was later named as a suspect in the murder of rapper Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. Notorious B.I.G. He was never charged in that case.
