Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 for the Xbox 360 is a massive hit and has debuted to chart-topping sales in North America and the UK. The game's plot takes place just before the events of the original Vegas, with polished graphics and interfaces. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 also incorporates some RPG elements in the form of experience points, and characters are fully customizable.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft has announced that it has acquired the full rights to the Tom Clancy name and its related IPs "on a perpetual basis and free of all related future royalty payments."
"After ten years of a highly successful collaboration which has seen the creation of blockbusters that set standards in the videogame industry, such as Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, today, acquiring the perpetual property rights of the Tom Clancy name for video games and related projects is a major event," stated Yves Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer at Ubisoft, in an official statement.
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told NewsWeek that the total purchase price is around $128 million at current exchange rates.
Meanwhile, the company has announced it is working on a Tom Clancy MMO, but no details were given about which Tom Clancy franchise the game will be based on: Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six. Ubisoft's CEO said that the MMO would cost around $50 million.
