Walter Cruz, 53, of Seakonk,
Massachusetts died Sunday afternoon
in a rafting accident.
According to the Portsmouth Herald News, police said he was
a passenger in a whitewater rafting trip.
There were seven commercial rafts and, when they were at Abol Bridge,
Cruz and other 4 people fell into the water. This happened around 11:30 a.m.
After the man was pulled out of the water and brought on the
raft, he became unconscious.
“When they got Mr. Cruz pulled into the raft, he began to
have an apparent medical issue,” Tibbetts said, according to MaineToday.com.
The ambulance transported him to Millinocket Regional
Hospital where he was
pronounced dead at 12:41 p.m.
Officials didn’t know what caused him to die. The cause of
death will be determined by the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office.
Lt. Doug Tibbetts of the Maine Warden Service said that the
water was very cold and fast. He made out a warning to rafters, advising them
to be careful when they got into the water.
The excursion was offered by New England Outdoors and Cruz
was with his two kids of 15 and 17.
The rest of the family was notified, his body being taken to
Lamson Funeral Home in Millinocket.
