Spaniard Rafel Nadal reached the second week at Roland
Garros after ca clear win in front of his compatriot Albert Montanes 6-1, 6-3,
6-2.
"I'm just happy to be in the second week of Roland
Garros," said Nadal. "I'm going to have a tough match with Hewitt,
but I'm very happy to be here."
The Serb Novak Djokovic beat his seventh straight French
Opponent Olivier Patience 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and ended French
men's participation at the home Grand Slam.
In the women championship, Amelie Mauresmo suffered another disappointment
in front of the Czech Lucia Safarova. Mauresmo
held 3-0 leads in the both sets but could not maintain. "It was close and
could have gone either way," said the reigning Wimbledon
champion. "There were a lot of long rallies, I"m very disappointed. "I
had the lead in both sets but just couldn't do it at the end."
Despite her painful shoulder, Sharapova has won the match with
her past teenaged compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-4. "I can't expect a
lot from my shoulder this week," Sharapova said.
"I just try to loosen it up as the match goes on. I've
made it pretty clear that doctors have given me the Ok to play through, even
though it doesn't feel 100 percent healthy. You're always going to have aches
and pains somewhere, especially on clay courts - it's normal.”
