Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ Debuts On Billboard’s No. 1

Radiohead’s new album, "In Rainbows," proved to be a smashing success in real life as well, three months after making its online debut with fans being given the chance to pay as much as they wanted for it, if anything at all.

After being available on the rock band’s official website for three months under the "name your own price" campaign, on Jan. 1st, Radiohead officially released "In Rainbows" as a CD package through the Dave Matthews-owned ATO Records.

This is the band’s fifth chart-topping album, after previously reaching No. 1 with "OK Computer" (1997), "Kid A" (2000), "Amnesiac" (2001) and "Hail to the Thief" (2003).

While the physical version of the record sold a mere 122,000 units, singer Thom Yorke revealed to the press that over a million digital copies were sold online (generating an estimated $6 million-$10 million for the band). However, despite its accomplishment, the "give it away on the Web/sell it in stores" model won't be catching on anytime soon. Radiohead's manager has already indicated that it was a one time thing for the band, and lead singer Thom Yorke recently acknowledged to Wired that it'd be hard to see any other act pulling it off:

Due to its revolutionary debut three months ago, the album was not eligible for the charts initially, but last week’s release made sure the album gets the recognition it deserves.

The album has also achieved success as a whole, without a breakout single, since "Jigsaw Falling Into Place," the official single released by the band, reached number 69 on the Modern Rock Chart, while the track "Bodysnatchers" charted a little higher at number 24.

"X-Factor" winner Leona Lewis’s debut album "Spirit" dropped on the third place after topping the chart for seven weeks, while Take That's "Beautiful World" rose one to No. 2 in its 50th chart week. Mika's "Life in Cartoon Motion" jumped five places to No. 4 in its 48th week.
