The cast for the Kevin MacDonald-directed “State of Play” keeps building up, with Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright Penn announced as the latest additions to an already impressive ensemble.
It was already known that Brad Pitt and Edward Norton would meet once again on the big screen in “State of Play,” after their acclaimed collaboration in “Fight Club.”
Last week, it was announced that actor Jason Bateman had also joined the cast and now, Variety reports that three well-appreciated actresses are also set to play in the Universal Pictures/Working Title adaptation of the British miniseries.
Matthew Michael Carnahan wrote the script. Producing are Andrew Hauptman, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Paul Abbott, who created the miniseries, is executive producer.
Variety previously reported that the story focuses on a newspaper’s investigation of the murder of a congressman’s girlfriend.
Edward Norton will play the congressman, while Brad Pitt will play the former campaign manager of the politician who initiates the paper's investigation. James Bateman will reportedly have the part of one of the key reporters.
McAdams will play a reporter with the newspaper investigating the death of the politician’s girlfriend. Mirren will play the newspaper's tough editor, a role undertaken by Bill Nighy in the original 2003 British miniseries.
Wright Penn will play the congressman's estranged wife, who develops a relationship with Pitt’s character.
McAdams is currently filming alongside Eric Bana in the Robert Schwentke-directed “The Time Traveler's Wife” for New Line. She recently wrapped Neil Burger's “The Return,” where her co-stars are Michael Pena and Tim Robbins.
Mirren next stars in “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” for Disney and in “Inkheart” for New Line.
Wright Penn next will be seen in “Beowulf,” alongside Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins.
