After prosecutors struggled for more than six years to get
R. Kelly into court on charges of child pornography, the jurors
ended the singer’s ordeal declaring him not guilty on all 14 counts.
Although twelve witnesses identified Kelly in the sex tape
that many have declared nauseating and 14 people identified the girl in the
video, who was 13 at the time, the R&B star was found innocent.
The reason behind the jury’s deliberation was the alleged
victim’s ID, which they said was not conclusive.
The members of the jury, nine men and three women, said they
didn’t take too much into account the prosecution’s star witness Lisa Van
Allen, who claimed she participated with R. Kelly and the alleged victim in
videotaped sex acts. Instead, the jurors said they considered the fact that
both the alleged victim, who is now 23, and her family had previously denied
she was the person in the video.
When it was clear he had won a complete acquittal, Kelly
started crying with relief, while repeating “Thank you, Jesus” over and over
again, said one of his attorneys, Sam Adam Jr. The singer, who had faced 15
years in jail if convicted, dabbed his face with a handkerchief as he hugged
each of his four attorneys.
While some of the jurors said they were convinced Kelly was
on the tape, none of them could be sure about the girl’s identity, therefore
there was no evidence about her age.
As both Kelly and the alleged victim denied appearing on the
tape, testimony throughout the trial focused on identifying Kelly on the video
and determining whether the girl was underage.
The jurors deliberated for three hours Thursday and for
about four hours Friday, before finding Kelly, 41, innocent on all 14 counts.
Of the twelve jurors, seven voted not guilty and five voted guilty.
