R&B singer R. Kelly not only gets sued, he can sue
others as well, such as concert promoter Rowe Entertainment for an allegedly
unpaid fee of $3.4 million – and in addition win.
R. Kelly Touring, which represents the singer, filed papers
Monday, Oct. 6, in Los Angeles,
asking a judge to confirm an arbitrator’s decision last month that R. Kelly is
owed and should be given $3.4 million.
Kelly’s company claimed that Georgia-based concert promoter
Rowe Entertainment owed the 41-year-old singer that massive amount of money for
shows scheduled for late 2007 and 2008.
An arbitrator agreed with Kelly, despite Rowe’s opposition,
as shown in documents. Rowe nevertheless failed to bring any valid arguments in
its defense.
Rowe Entrainment has not been having the best of luck lately.
Last month, it paid singer Ne-Yo $700,000, who sued the company after being
dropped from the same tour after only two shows.
Ne-Yo, real name Shaffer Chimere Smith, was very frustrated
back in November 2007, when he was fired by Rowe, and told the media that he
believed he had been removed from the tour, where he performed as R. Kelly’s
opening act, because the latter was not pleased with fans and critics
preferring the former.
R. Kelly has of course denied these allegations.
This was an eventful summer for R. Kelly, real name Robert
Kelly, who was acquitted in mid-June by a Chicago
jury of 14 charges of child pornography. He had been on trial for making an
explicit sex video that allegedly showed him engage in sexual acts with a girl
as young as 13.
R. Kelly’s career is not all controversy and scandals, as he
received three Grammy awards in 1997 for his song “I Believe I Can Fly.” He
intends to release a new album by the end of 2008.
