Although the new James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace” still
has one more day to go before hitting U.S. theaters, it is expected to
gross major sums at box offices and effortlessly outshine its prequel, 2006’s
“Casino Royale.”
The 22nd 007 film has already seen a strong play
overseas, as it has taken in over $160 million in more than 60 international
markets up to now. It opened in London
a couple of weeks ago and earned a record-smashing 15.4 million pounds ($25
million) during its first weekend on the big screens.
According to Reuters, Paul Dergarabedian of box office
watcher Media by Numbers explained that the James Bond flick was probably the “most
anticipated movie of the holiday season,” thus raising both the stakes and the
expectations, adding that everybody expected outstanding results.
In spite of the fact that he did not offer any estimative debut
weekend numbers, Paul Dergarabedian said that the new 007 production starring
Daniel Craig and Olga Kurylenko was definitely heading in the right direction
of equaling or surpassing “Casino Royale’s” revenues. The 2006 movie grossed
$40.8 million during its first weekend in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.
“Casino Royale” launched actor Daniel Craig as the new
superspy of the franchise and grew to be the best Bond ever, taking into
account its total income of $167 million at the North American box office, as
well as international revenue of about $594 million.
And “Quantum of Solace” is even more predisposed to an
amazing gross this upcoming weekend, since it is the only production that opens
domestically on Friday. The domestic release includes screenings at 12:01 a.m.
tomorrow in more than 1,600 locations.
In addition, crowds seem to enjoy moviegoing during this
time of year, as “Madagascar:
Escape 2 Africa” opened last weekend with an overwhelming $63 million.
Although critics have received the Bond flick well, reviews
really don’t matter when it comes to the publicity “Quantum of Solace” benefits
from.
The film approaches more a Bourne-like production rather
than a magical Agent 007 movie, but this aspect is not likely to stop fans from
packing theaters. However, they should be aware of the fact that an explosion breaks
at every two of minutes, everybody is on the run and… on the kill, while the
story fades away somewhere between the first couple of shootings. Olga
Kurylenko was named the hottest Bond girl ever by Maxim magazine, but her
performance is not that good, if you as me.
Nevertheless, he’s Bond. James Bond. And nothing can stop
him.
