Just a little more than a week after Apple released the new 3G iPhone the international team of programmers that goes by the name of “iphone-dev team” already released a new tool that jailbreaks the device.
What this means is that by using the new tool, called Pwnage 2.0, a user gains complete access to functions of his or her iPhone such as the read or write ones and can install third party applications on the device even if those applications are not approved by Apple.
The same team of programmers developed a similar tool for the previous version the iPhone. The application had been at that time received with much enthusiasm, because it was the only tool that allowed third party software to run on the iPhone. What is more, the tool was also able to unlock the popular device and make it possible to be used in countries where it hadn't been released back then. The new version of the application is not able to do this just yet, but the “iphone-dev team” said that it plans to include this feature in a future release.
The main question that remains to be answered is whether people really needed Pwnage 2.0. At this moment, Apple has released the App Store, where people can get third party software for the device, and about one quarter of the applications are free. Besides, the software that people download from the App Store is pretty much guaranteed not to do anything bad to the iPhone, something that's not necessarily that sure about an application that one downloads from a no-name site.
