Roger Avary, the Oscar-winning screenwriter for “Pulp
Fiction”, was arrested on Sunday for crashing his car in northwest of Los Angeles.
According to Capt. Monica McGrath of the Ventura County
Sheriff's Department, Avary, 42, was charged for driving under the influence
and for manslaughter when he crashed his car outside the Ojai Lumber Co.
building at 1900 E. Ojai Ave.,
Reuters reports.
The accident occurred at 1 a.m. in Ojai, which is about 80
miles of Los Angeles.
Andreas Zedini, 34, from Italy, who was a passenger in
Avary’s car, was taken out of the car by firefighters. He died later at Ventura County Medical
Center.
Avary’s wife, Gretchen, 40, was thrown out of the vehicle
and was found by police in the road.
According to McGrath, she was hospitalized with serious
injuries, Los Angeles Times informs.
Avary was detained for a short period of time and was later
released for a $50,000 bail.
Avary won in 1995 the Academy Award for co-writing “Pulp
Fiction” along with Quentin Tarantino.
After that the two best friends estranged, each one taking
different directions in their careers. Tarantino went on to the road of fame
and fortune, while Avary took on the role of rewriting other people’s work.
He recently worked as co-writer and executive producer for
the movie “Beowulf” which was released last year.
Avary and his wife live in Ojai, which a small city popular
among artists located about 14 miles of Ventura.
