The passing of Proposition 8 in California, which modified the state’s Constitution by stating that a marriage is a union between a man and a woman and thus banning gay marriage, has been a very controversial topic. Even the famous Californian Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is against Proposition 8 and is hoping that the Supreme Court might reverse the result of the public referendum held lat Tuesday.

Millions of protesters have taken over the streets, irate with the result of the vote. The number of gay marriage supporters in California is massive, especially since over 18,000 gay couples got married since gay marriage was declared legal in the state of California.

A Mormon temple, for instance, was one of the picketed locations in California. Thousands of protesters chanted for hours, holding up signs that read messages such as “Love not H8” or “Did you cast a ballot or a stone?” The protesters chose this church because it was one of the churches which not only endorsed Proposition 8, but it also donated money to the campaign that sustained the passing of the controversial proposition.

In Connecticut, however, gay couples rejoiced because their state finally approved gay marriage, as opposed to what has been always thought to be the most liberal state in the United States, namely California. Gay couples exchanged vows and were declared legally married in Connecticut, while other rallied in California in order for gay couples to enjoy they same right – again – in their own state. The protests are thought to reach epic proportions, as the protesters themselves declared they will take over the country until the ban on gay marriage will be lifted.

In Manhattan, more people rallied outside yet another Mormon church, chanting “Shame on you!” for a few hours straight. That particular church was another that encouraged people to vote “yes” on passing Proposition 8 in California. Many other institutions which endorsed the passing of Proposition 8 will be boycotted in the days to come.
