Tom Cruise is doing the rounds promoting his historic film
“Valkyrie,” out Dec. 25, and every interview appears to be a new opportunity to
reflect on his personal life.
For instance, attending the New York premiere of his film on Monday,
Cruise, 46, told People how amazed and proud he is of his family: wife Katie
Holmes and daughter Suri and of course, his teenage children adopted with
former wife Nicole Kidman.
Of Suri, 2, Cruise said she has an “incredible” vocabulary
already but that his favorite words remain “I love you, dada” and “I love you,
mama.” He also took the opportunity to praise Holmes, who currently stars in
the Broadway adaptation of “All My Sons,” commenting that “it doesn’t take a
lot of effort with her.”
Romance is as strong as ever for the couple, as Cruise
confessed he always leaves flowers for his wife of two years in her dressing
room and little love notes. As he has been generous enough to share, he
proposed to the former “Dawson’s Creek” actress
atop the Eiffel Tower. And we all surely remember his
enthusiastic couch-jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s show three years ago, as he
professed his love for Holmes and swore he had never been happier in his life.
Cruise has been through a bit of a public image-impasse this
past couple of years, especially after arguing quite passionately with Matt
Lauer on the subject of post-partum depression and medication while on his show
and because of his affiliation with Scientology.
The actor has taken the bull by the horns, as the saying
goes, revisiting Lauer’s Today Show this week and apologizingfor his past appearance.
Back in 2005, Cruise became so impassioned during the interview that he called
Lauer “glib.”
This time around, he admitted he “could have handled” the situation
better and that he has learned there is a time and a place to talk about
Scientology – which he isn’t done talking about, he added.
Lauer also brought up the subject of Cruise’s family and
noted that he hadn’t seen the actor jumping on any couches lately, to which
Cruise laughed and replied he “can’t help” that because Holmes is such an
“amazing” woman.
Tuesday night, he was a guest on David Letterman’s show and
once again poked fun at himself and the unflattering public image he has developed,
reading the top ten list of crazy things people say about Tom Cruise on the
Internet. For example, that he still has the underpants from “Risky Business.”
Or that he believes all emotional and psychological disorders can be cured with
Vicks VapoRub; or that he is a “power mad ego maniac who’s completely insulated
from reality.”
Self-irony, it always makes a good impression.
“Valkyrie,” directed by Bryan Singer, opens on Christmas Day;
its evolution at the box office will be interesting to watch, considering the
difficult subject matter – Cruise plays Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, a little-known
German officer who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler in a little-known
coup.
