Pro-Democracy Leader Suu Kyi Meets Junta Official

A diplomat in Burma has told local media that pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was driven from her house this Thursday afternoon to a government house to meet with a Burmese government official.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 12 of the last 18 years. The three cars that arrived at her house took her to the government house in order to hold talks with Aung Kyi, a newly appointed minister. He was appointed to the post on October 8 to talk with the Nobel peace laureate, Suu Kyi.

On Wednesday, Aung Kyi was named from deputy labor minister to labor minister. It is not clear but it seems that he will have to coordinate all of Suu Kyi’s contacts with the U.N. and the regime.

According to media sources, the U.N. wants to end the political deadlock between the democracy supporters and the military.

Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party won the elections in 1990 however, power was denied by a military that has ruled the former Burma since 1962. She is the daughter of assassinated first prime minister of Burma and independence hero General Aung San, and one of the most high profile prisoners of conscience in the world.

It was U.N. special envoy Ibrahim Gambari that suggested this appointment, earlier this month during his visit to Myanmar. The junta accepted this idea out of respect for him and wanting to smooth relations with the country's democracy icon, Suu Kyi.

The U.N. envoy met Thursday with Chinese officials in order to push Beijing more into stopping the military junta involving in the pro-democracy protests. Aung Kyi is known to U.N. officials as being more reasonable and accessible in comparison to the junta leaders.

Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi of China said to Ibrahim Gambari: “We will continue to support you in playing a constructive role in finding a peaceful resolution in Myanmar,” according to media sources.
