Fox has picked up a fourth season of “Prison Break,” ordering another 22 episodes that will start airing this fall, the network announced Monday.
The third season of the action drama series was interrupted by the prolonged Hollywood writers’ strike. Fox aired 13 episodes of the series this season, averaging 8.2 million viewers and a 3.5 rating among adults 18-49, trade paper Variety informs.
A fourth season is in the works, as Fox has ordered another 22 episodes from 20th Century Fox TV. The new set of episodes will pick up where the third season left off, namely with the main character having escaped the Panama prison.
The new season will see Michael (Wentworth Miller) seek revenge against the people who killed his love interest, per Variety. The series’ other protagonist is Dominic Purcell, who portrays Miller’s brother, Lincoln Burrows.
The filming location will change from Dallas to Los Angeles. Production on the next season will commence in May.
“Prison Break” is created by Paul T. Scheuring, who is executive producer along with Matt Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, Dawn Parouse, Neal H. Moritz, Kevin Hooks and Brett Ratner. Adelson-Parouse Prods. produces with 20th Century Fox TV.
A planned spinoff of the show has also been reported to be in the works. The potential new series is tentatively titled “Prison Break: Cherry Hill” and would be set at a women’s prison, as previously reported by the Hollywood Reporter (before the WGA strike).
Also Monday, Fox announced “The Return of Jezebel James” would not return for a new season, after continued record-low ratings, Variety reports.
“Jezebel James,” created by “Gilmore Girls” mastermind Amy Sherman-Palladino, stars Parker Posey as a successful children’s book editor who asks her sister, portrayed by Lauren Ambrose, to carry her baby.
“Prison Break” has enjoyed good ratings as well as critical acclaim. It has received Golden Globe, Emmy and People’s Choice nominations, among others, taking home the 2005 People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama.
