Prince William to also Serve in Royal Navy, RAF

Britain's Prince William looks geared towards serving in all three branches of the military as he is to be with the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force next year as part of his continuing career in the armed forces. The Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of York are all qualified pilots with the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The 25-year-old, who will complete his time with the Household Cavalry Regiment at the end of this year, will start his secondments of four months each in January, 2008. As a Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry regiment, William currently commands a troop consisting of 12 men. He entered the Blues and Royals having completed training at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in December 2006.

"His time with the RAF will... allow him to realise a lifetime ambition to learn to fly," a Clarence House spokesman has said. "He will be able to share the working lives of airmen and sailors."

A few days ago, the UK Ministry of Defense announced that a British soldier killed earlier last week by an Afghan bomb was the platoon commander of Prince William. In a statement released after the news, Prince Williams said that he is "deeply saddened" by the death of Majors Alexis Roberts, whom he remembers with "great respect" as platoon commander and also as a good friend.

Prince William made headlines as of late after apparently rekindling his relationship with girlfriend Kate Middleton, following an amicable split in April. Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first public night out together as a reunited couple ended with their car chased by some keen paparazzi on motorcycles, bringing up memories of Princess Diana’s tragic accident ten years ago.

Speaking on the behalf of the heir to the British throne, the prince's press secretary, Paddy Harverson, said the incident was unbelievable given the circumstances, as a London court examines events surrounding the Princess of Wales' death.

"Having already been photographed leaving a club, the prince and Kate Middleton were then pursued in his car by photographers on motorcycles and on foot," Harverson said in the statement.

Prince William of Wales is the elder son of Charles, Prince of Wales and the late Diana, Princess of Wales, thus the second in the line of succession to the British throne.
