Premiers of Two Koreas Hold Talks

On Wednesday the prime ministers of South and North Korea met for the first time in 15 years in order to discuss peace initiatives and to provide aid for the impoverished North.

The meeting comes after six weeks when North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and President Roh Moo-hyun met at their second summit ever that took place in Pyongyang, Reuters reports.

The last time the two countries held talks was in 1992 when they were suspended due to the crisis generated by the nuclear weapons program of North Korea.

The meeting will last until Friday and the two prime minister wish to discuss issues like the development of a North Korean port, railways, and shipyards.

The talks between the premiers are being held at a Seoul hotel.

Other issues that will be discussed will be the developing a joint fishing area around the western coast disputed by the two countries and the expansion of reunions for families split by the North-South Korean border.

Also it will be discussed a way to improve convenience for the working South Koreans in the city of Kaesong, at the border with the North Korea. Some solutions would be to simply the border customs inspection and to improve the communication network in the area.

Before the first meeting, North Korean premier Kim said: “We are here having our first meeting to undertake the dignified wishes of the North-South leaders.”

South Korea fears that the collapse of its neighbor could damage its own economy so it has been working to help North Korea in order to make the unification easier.

The two premiers will meet again later this month in Pyongyang in order to discuss the tensions along the border and ways to decrease it.

Around 50 protesters gathered outside the hotel claiming that South Korea made too many compromises with North Korea without receiving anything in return.

The protesters set on fire a picture of Kim Jong II, North Korean leader, and chanted: “Stop lavishing aid on North Korea!”

Roh called for a meeting on Tuesday with the leaders of China, North Korea and the U.S. in order to have a peace treaty instead of the truce signed almost half century ago.

North Korea and South Korea fought the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. It ended in a truce, meaning that the two countries are still at war.

According to the leader of the U.S. and China’s ambassador to South Korea a peace treaty cannot be reached until North Korea won’t put aside its plans for nuclear weapons.
