Powerful Storms Sweep the US, Delay Travel

Bad weather across the most part of the United States has disrupted air and land travel, church services and power systems. A powerful snowstorm hit most of the Northeast, also causing car accidents. The Northeast and Great Lakes have been pounded with heavy snow, ice, rain and howling winds.

Around 103,000 utility customers were blacked out in parts of Pennsylvania, while churches in Michigan and in upstate New York canceled Sunday services because of the weather.

"[...] A nasty mix of drizzle, sleet and freezing rain will spread from southern New England into the mid-Atlantic as a push of warm air continues along the Eastern Seaboard," claims AccuWeather.com

Freezing rain mixed with snow will probably create hazardous conditions in some areas, especially to motorists. It's probable that temperatures will range from the 10s to the 30s in the Northeast; between 0 degrees up to 20s in the northern Plains and upper Midwest; temperatures in the 60s and 70s, in the Southeast; and the Southwest was forecast to get temperatures in the 40s and 50s.

Reportedly, there have been three deaths related to the winter storm, as slippery roads are blamed for two traffic deaths in Michigan and one in Wisconsin. Also, dozens of other traffic accidents, most of them minor, had been blamed on slippery roads and whiteout conditions in Massachusetts.

"The gusty winds could cause travel problems for drivers of high-profile vehicles, especially in the higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains," Accuweather.com warns.

Air travel has been hit severely, as more than 200 flights were canceled because of the weather Saturday at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Also, all other flights were delayed an hour, according to Chicago Department of Aviation spokesman Gregg Cunningham.
