The child pornography trial of R&B singer R Kelly is no simple process, as each day brings new witnesses and ever-entangled testimonies. A potential new witness may now bring crucial information to the singer’s defense, Kelly’s lawyers said Wednesday.
Wednesday’s proceeding in court, during the Chicago child pornography trial of 41-year-old star R Kelly, was interrupted when his lawyers told the judge they had been contacted by a potential witness that morning.
The defense said they had not known about the new witness until he called them. Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan allowed for a one-day break, in order for the mystery witness to fly in from another state and make a deposition, reports the Chicago Tribune.
This will also give defense lawyers time to prepare a cross-examination of a Georgia woman who was set to testify Wednesday but was interrupted by the announcement of the new witness.
The woman was to testify that she had an encounter with both Kelly and the girl appearing in the sex videotape which has been shown to the jury, reports the Tribune. She is now expected to testify Thursday.
While Judge Gaughan told the court he had “no idea” what was going on, referring to the new witness, he confirmed that the trial would resume Thursday morning.
Kelly has pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of child pornography. He is accused of having videotaped himself having sex with an underage girl. The video, which is at the center of the prosecution’s case, is believed to have been made between 1998 and 2000.
Kelly denies he is the man in the video, while the alleged victim, who would have been around 13 at the time, also denies it is she. The singer faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Several witnesses, including family members, a childhood friend and the friend’s father, have identified the girl in the video as the alleged victim.
The tape was sent anonymously to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper in 2002. The paper then handed it to police.
