First thing's first, the idea that the German filmmaker might have had when starting making “Postal” was a good one: let’s make a black comedy about taboo subjects. And what better such subjects could there be if not the 9/11 attack and political correctness.
But Uwe Boll seems to have forgotten that he is considered one of the worst directors in the world. To be honest, even if you think making art is just doing everything different from how it’s usually done, taking a look at what critics say about you isn’t a bad idea. Mr. Boll tried it, but simply couldn’t handle the much too daring concept.
As much as ‘Postal’ wanted to become a Monty Python sort of movie, it couldn’t get above the cheap-gag-practical-joke level. The movie has no clever plot, no hidden ideas, nothing that can make anybody mistake it with art. It is just somebody toying with the camera.
The movie was planned to be release the same day as the much awaited “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” but I for one cannot figure out if the move was just part of the filmmaker’s “I-couldn’t-care-less” attitude towards Hollywood or just a cover-up for the lack of success that would probably have to be explained to the film’s investors.
Even if another day had been chosen, it would still have been very unlikely for the movie to earn a decent amount of money.
Although it was scheduled to be released in over 1,000 theatres, most of the cinema owners have already given up screening the movie.
