Pope Benedict’s statement upon arriving in Cameron that AIDS cannot be overcome by the distribution of condoms, moreover, they will worsen the problem, has brought him pages of criticism worldwide. The media responded with thousands of articles on the comments, calling Benedict a “threat to public health,” and saying that the Catholic Church should “enter the 21st century.
"The statement by the Pope is inconsistent with science, it's inconsistent with our experiences and it is not in sync with what Catholics have experienced and believe," World Health Assembly President, Guyana's Health Minister Leslie Ramsammy said.
He further declared the position by the Pope on condom use as “absolutely and unequivocally wrong.” In Africa, more than 25 million people have died of AIDS, and another 22 million are living with the disease. Health care experts believe that by increasing the number of condoms provided to the population, the number of HIV cases will decrease.
However, the situation doesn’t seem to stand that way, as the number of HIV cases is on the rise no matter the measures taken. Probably, the Pope’s remarks wanted to underline another fact, namely that providing so many condoms to the population, infidelity is encouraged. There are so many countries in Africa where women don’t have anything to say when it comes about sex. They are forced into sex, while many male partners have multiple partners raising their risk to get infected with HIV.
So, are the Pope’s remarks something that can be blamed? Or we should ask ourselves what is the real reason that can be blamed for the current HIV epidemic in Africa.
