Police Discovers More Bombs in Hyderabad

Indian police found several explosive devices in Hyderabad, the capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, after two explosions killed 42 people and injured dozens more on Saturday.

After the two blasts ripped through a park and a popular dinner, security forces launched a search operation for the perpetrators and other devices that could explode.

According to a police official, more than 12 bombs were discovered and defused since Saturday across the metropolis, all having timers and placed in crowded areas. Most of them had a tremendous destructive force and would have caused dozens of victims, the police said.

A first explosion occurred in the Lumbini Park where people were watching a laser show late Saturday, while the second bomb went off several minutes later at a popular eatery. Eight women, two children and seven students were among the 34 identified victims.

Six people were in serious condition at a local hospital, medical officials saying the number of fatalities could rise due to their precarious health condition.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the coordinated attacks were allegedly planned and carried out by terrorist groups from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Reddy said the families of the victims will receive a compensation of 500,000 rupees (about 12,000 dollars), while the injured persons will receive 25,000 rupees (about 607 dollars) and free medical assistance. Also, the families who lost a member that supported them will be given jobs in the local administration.

Reddy said several people were detained and questioned about the incidents, but no arrests were made.

Local media said the Islamic fundamentalist organization Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI) is suspected to stand behind the bloody attacks that killed 32 people at the dinner and ten more in Lumbini Park.

The organization allegedly carried out another attack in May that targeted the central Mecca mosque, eleven people being killed on the spot and five more after clashes with police forces.

Security across the city has been tightened, especially in crowded areas like commercial centers, railway and bus stations.
