Police Capture Man Who Shot Wife inside NJ Church

Police captured the man who drove across the country in pursuit of his estranged wife and eventually shot her dead inside a church in New Jersey yesterday.

Police officials said the man, Joseph M. Pallipurath, was captured in Georgia. He was arrested around midnight near Atlanta, said New Jersey district U.S. Marshal James Plousis.

Joseph Pallipurath, 27, is accused of killing his wife, 24-year-old Reshma James inside the St. Thomas Syrian Orthodox Knanaya Church in Clifton. The gunman also shot dead a man who tried to intervene and stop him. The man was identified by police investigators as Dennis John Mallosseril, the church’s director. The woman’s cousin, Silvy Perincheril, suffered a severe wound to the head and is now in critical condition in hospital.

Reshma James had taken out a restraining order against Pallipurath. She died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, at the hospital and the man who tried to intervene and stop the shooting died three hours later also at the St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson, N.J.

Angry that his wife refused to go with him after he found her, the gunman opened fire in the vestibule of the church where about 200 people were attending services at the Asian-Indian house of worship, St. Thomas Syrian Orthodox Knanaya Church. After the shooting, he fled the scene in his green convertible Jeep Wrangler with a black soft top and the California license 5JHD200.

After learning of his son’s crimes, Pallipurath's father, Mathai Pallipurath, issued a plea Monday urging him to surrender.

Pallipurath and James were wed in India about a year ago in an arranged marriage, but after they moved to Sacramento the man became abusive.

"She found out he wasn't all he was [made] out to be," Passaic County Prosecutor James Avigliano said according to the New York Daily News. "He was abusive toward her, and she left him."
