According to police, a man who was carrying a samurai sword
and a shotgun was arrested just a block away from the U.S. Capitol on Friday
afternoon. There was no report of fires being shot or injuries.
The man was identified as Michael Steven Gorbey, 38, who has
a long criminal record. He was arrested and charged of felon in possession of a
firearm with other charges on the way, Reuters reports.
Gorbey didn’t put any resistance when he was arrested.
U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider
said: “The officers were able to apprehend him quite easily. He's got an
extensive criminal record.”
She also said that his residence was unknown as there were
many addresses linked to his name.
He drove a green Chevy truck with Utah
license plates which was taken by police and submitted to investigation.
Police didn’t know from where did Gorbey get the truck from.
According to Terrance Gainer, the Senate sergeant-at-arms,
who spoke with The Washington Post, wires were coming out of the glove box of
the truck and propane tanks were inside of the vehicle. With a robotic camera, police
was able to see inside the truck and using a powerful water hose it destroyed
the things inside of it.
Schneider said: "We don't know if that vehicle belongs
to him or not, but the vehicle is associated with him," The Salt Lake
Tribune informs.
According to police, Gorbey was seen around 1 p.m. Friday in Lower
Senate Park
when he was apprehended by police. The park is situated near Union Station,
which is a busy train and a subway station.
The truck was parked in the proximity of the Brotherhood of
Teamsters building, outside the secured zone of the Capitol.
On Friday afternoon the alert system at the Senate was activated,
but the staff was not evacuated. They were not allowed to access their cars in
the adjacent parking lots.
