Poland: People Get Paid To Show Interest In iPhone 3G

Apple is working hard on promoting its iPhone 3G all over the world, and they may have had their success in the States, but how popular is the iPhone in Europe? Not that popular, we can tell that just by looking at the 10-man lines in front of stores in Poland and other countries where Orange tried to line up crowds.

The basic idea for the launch in Poland was to have a crowd lined up in front of Orange stores even if they had to pay people to do it (which they did!). And this turned out to be more than just a rumor, since Orange Poland admitted to paying actors to stand in queues.

“We have these fake queues at front of 20 stores around the country to drum up interest in the iPhone,” a spokesperson for the carrier told Reuters.

This goes to show that we probably won't be seeing any high figure sales for the iPhone 3G any time soon, especially amid controversies regarding the quality of the iPhone. The situation in Poland was not singular in terms of iPhone “success”. In Romania, the queues were mostly formed of journalists and people curious to take a peek at the iPhone, rather than buyers.

Of course, it is hard to make a comparison between the United States launch, and these two countries, considering that people in Romania and Poland are less likely to pay the steep prices and monthly charges associated with the iPhone 3G.

Apple may be popular in the United States, but it is not as popular in other parts of the world. However, that's not a reason to stop trying.
