After two years since it was announced, Sony’s virtual
universe built around its gaming console will finally open for public. Starting
tomorrow, PlayStation Home will be available as an open beta for all PS3 users.
What can you do in Home? Basically, a lot of fun staff like
meeting with people, watching exclusive entertainment material available from
Sony and its partners.
Though, don’t get fooled! PlayStation Home has nothing to do
with Linden’s
Second Life. PlayStation Home revolves around PlayStation and unlike Second
Life is intended to be rather a virtual meeting place for PS3 owners rather
than a virtual universe with its laws and economy.
As Sony explained, in Home every new user will start with a
fully customizable (and clothed)
avatar and an empty apartment-like room. For just a few
bucks, the users will be able to buy clothes and new furniture in order to
decorate their virtual apartments.
Home has also a disadvantage: it will not the gamers cross
the geographical borders. For example the US
gamers will be able to interact only with other US residents, while the Europeans
would engage in multiplayer games only with citizens from the same continent.
Apparently, Sony has decided for this approach to avoid cross-border
intellectual property problems.
