Following the decrease in sold units of the PlayStation 3 gaming console, Sony believes that its new social interaction networking platform will give it a sales bump. Dan Hill, PlayStation Home’s European service manager pointed out that, once the company will fully release the Home platform, this will become one of the main features that will sell the console.
Home promises to be the most complex online multiplayer platform ever developed due to the intuitive manner that the service allows users to play and communicate with each other. Hill explains that the full release of Home is developed to become an integrated user-experience, rather than a chat room where users wait for other players to join in.
Users will have the possibility to wander around several multiplayer tournaments and then have a break at PixelJunk pub, socialize with friends or other players they’ve just met and head over to another game room. The magic is that this whole experience comes with an integrated platform and, if things go well with Home, it might get a bit too addictive for some gamers. It is clear that this concept doesn’t focus on playability or how fast can you get on a server and play some Resistance 2 in co-op mode, but it really shines when you think about how realistic the platform’s approach is.
If Sony will succeed in developing this platform to its full protection, it will be very likely for us to witness a revolution in the way people play games. It only remains to be seen how gamers will react to this experience.
