Plans to Bar Anorexic Models Dropped by British Fashion Council

Plans to finally bar most super-skinny, unhealthy-looking models from the catwalk by demanding health certificates to prove they do not have anorexia were dropped.

The British Fashion Council, the entity managing the London Fashion Week, made public the decision and confirmed it through a letter to the fashion industry from its chief executive Hilary Riva.

The London Fashion Week organizers motivated their decision to drop the above-mentioned plans by saying that fashion industry executives thought the measure wasn’t just unnecessary, but also expensive and intrusive. A medical exam would have cost about $500 – the approximate equivalent of a model’s fee for appearing in one show in London Fashion Week.

"From our conversations with our international counterparts in New York, Milan and Paris it has become clear that they do not recognize the need for an international health certificate," Riva wrote in the letter Wednesday. The letter was posted on BFC’s Web site.

Plans to start demanding health certificates for models were made last year when the Model Health Inquiry was set up by the BFC to look into the models’ health problems. The measure was taken in order to respond to the public concerns that excessive dieting not only endangers the model’s health, but also sets up unrealistic expectations for young women.

"This will only work if it's an international solution," Riva wrote.

Other fashion centers like Paris, Milan and New York said the plan is not viable.

The anorexic models became a highly-debated issue especially after models in Brazil and Uruguay died form complications related to their super thin stature. Luisel Ramos, a 22-year-old Uruguayan model collapsed and died moments after stepping off the runway two years ago. Just a few months later, her 18-year-old sister died as well. Both models died of medical complications related to anorexia.
