'Pirates' Not Ready To Step Down From The Box Office Lead

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is still ruling the North American box office with a three-day revenue of $43.2 million in its second weekend in cinemas, while overwhelming the international box office cashing in an estimated $105.4 million from 103 markets.

So far, the movie made a total of $625.3 million to date worldwide including North America.

Disney’s third installment of the Pirates saga, reuniting the cast and crew from the previous two films in the series including actors Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Geoffrey Rush, has already made the fourth biggest opening weekend ever behind "Spider-Man 3," "Dead Man's Chest," and "Shrek the Third."

"At World's End" is the 24th film in industry history to have grossed more than $400 million overseas, and the fifth Disney title to pass that milestone.

However, the sequel faced unexpected competition coming from "Knocked Up," starring Seth Rogen and TV star Katherine Heigl, which grossed almost $30 million in its opening weekend in 2,871 locations.

The audience for Universal’s romantic comedy was young and female, with 57% comprising that gender and 44% under age 30. 14% of the audience was Hispanic.

"It looks like a lot of people wanted to get knocked up this weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

Meanwhile, "Shrek 3" fell into third place, a drop of 49.7 per cent over last week and "Spider-Man 3" registered a weekend estimate of $11.8 million from 77 territories, lifting its overseas total to $525.7 million, Reuters reported.
