Pirate Bay Trial to Start in Sweden

The law of copyright has put the Web site The Pirate Bay on trial because four men behind this business have helped million of users all around the world to download copyright protected files for free. The trial against the four men will start on Monday in Stockholm.

The trial in Sweden will determine the extension to which file-sharing becomes illegal and many music, film labels and file-shares worldwide will track the events of the trial with great interest. The defendants are accused of breaking the Swedish copyright law by helping the users download protected games, movies and games.

Papers of the trial show that The Pirate Bay has 22 million users who are being directed by the site to films, music and protected material through torrents. Also, the Web site doesn’t host copyrighted content, but uses it by directing its users.

Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, 28, Peter Sunde, 30, Fredrik Neij, 30, and Carl Lundstrom, 48, are the men behind the torrents business and face up to two years in jail and $14.3 million in claims for compensation and damages if they are convicted. Yet, they stick to the fact that they hadn’t done anything illegal. Lundstrom is the one who finances the site, while the other three administer it.

The trial has arrested a lot of attention and the men have also called a news conference to which the participants came in buses decorated with pirate ship and banners. Warg, Sunde, Neij and Lundstrom banned the media because they thought the organization of the reports on the matter wasn’t done very good.

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., MGM Pictures Inc., Colombia Pictures Industries Inc., 20th Century Fox Films Co., Sony BMG, Universal and EMI are some of the labels involved in the trial and the evidence to convict the four includes e-mails sent between the suspects and witness testimony.
