British rock singer Pete Doherty has been sentenced to 14 weeks behind bars for breaking the terms of his probation order and continued drug use.
"Today, Peter Doherty was sentenced to a total of 14 weeks in jail for being in breach of his probation order," record company rep Jon Bills was quoted by People.com as saying in a prepared statement.
The punishment means Doherty is being forced to postpone a concert at the Royal Albert Hall on April 26th, which would have been his biggest solo show yet.
However, "the show is due to be rescheduled and all tickets will be valid for the new date once it has been announced. Peter was very much looking forward to the show and would like to offer his sincerest apologies to all his fans and to all those concerned," the statement added.
The sentence might also force Doherty to pull out of this year's Glastonbury festival at the end of June, unless he will be granted an early release.
Following Tuesday afternoon's 30-minute hearing at West London Magistrate's Court, a spokesperson for the court confirmed that the Babyshambles lead singer, who had been threatened with up to four months in jail if he broke the terms of his probation, was taken to lockdown for "breach of time keeping, non compliance of his order and using different drugs."
In October last year, the musician successfully avoided jail when Judge Davinder Lachar gave him a suspended jail sentence and placed him under an 18-month supervision order after he pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis, as well as admitting various driving offences.
According to his supervision order, the 29-year-old rocker and former boyfriend of British model Kate Moss was required to make regular visits to court for progress reports, as well as attend a 12-month drug rehabilitation program. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine for driving without insurance and for having no MOT certificate.
In the past, Doherty spent two months behind bars after burgling his former Libertines band mate Carl Barat's flat in 2003.
