When you’re healthy and you’re not worried about fixing anything about your body or brain, you’re thinking about way in which you can improve yourself. It’s human nature to evolve, and if medicine can help evolution a bit, why not take advantage of progress and technology? Some compare the trend with slim people exercising – they’re not exercising to lose weight, but to stay healthy and improve their physical performances, a goal which is to be admired in most people.
Keeping true to the above statements, it has recently been shown in a number of scientific studies that most people who are physically and mentally healthy are looking into ways in which they can improve their mental abilities. Often, they use drugs such as Ritalin, a drug which is renowned for its ability to boost your performance at school or in your career. Of course, there are voiced that claim that such practices are dangerous for your health, yet many have nothing against taking performance-enhancing substances, as ling as they are both legal and safe, preferably with no dangerous or long-lasting side-effects.
According to Dr. Nora Volkov, the director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse, it seems that people in the United States are abusing stimulant medications. Recent surveys that have been conducted on college campuses, for instance, have shown that drugs such as the aforementioned Ritalin, but also Provigil, methylphenidate or modafinil – traditionally used to combat narcolepsy – are being used to enhance one’s performances, not only by students, but also by their professors and other people. However, these drugs are also used as ways to “get high,” not merely for improving one’s academic or physical performances.
