Pellicano Trial to Begin This Week

The man once known as “private investigator to the stars,” Anthony Pellicano, will finally stand trial this week on charges of racketeering, wiretapping and fraud, after years of delays.

Anthony Pellicano at one point enjoyed the good life as a seemingly reliable private investigator who was worth his Hollywood clientele’s paychecks. He was ultimately exposed though as a man relying on illegal practices in order to “help” his clients.

The 63-year-old will stand trial Wednesday for racketeering, fraud and conspiracy, as the mastermind behind an elaborate scheme of wiretapping, briberies to law-enforcement officials, telephone company employees and others in order to uncover compromising information for clients preparing themselves for divorce, civil lawsuits and even criminal charges.

It appears Pellicano stopped at nothing to do his job.

Court documents released on Friday detail the allegations against the former private detective and promise irrefutable evidence regarding his illegal practices, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Federal prosecutors say a former LAPD sergeant performed thousands of database searches for criminal histories on 300 people, to help Pellicano in his “investigations.” He received money in return for his services.

Prosecutors Daniel Saunders and Kevin Lally wrote in the trial brief filed Friday, as quoted by the Times: “Operating under a veneer of legitimacy . . . Pellicano obtained a vaunted reputation as a private investigator who reliably obtained information that other investigators could not.

“Underneath this veneer, however, was a racketeering enterprise that prospered by trafficking in illegally acquired personal information.”

The papers name several witnesses and detail their testimonies. Hedge fund manager Adam Sender will testify that Pellicano wiretapped a movie producer he accused of stealing more than $1 million from him. Sandra Will Carradine, the former wife of the actor Keith Carradine, will testify that Pellicano recorded Carradine’s phone calls during the couple’s divorce.

Susan Reddan Maguire, the former wife of developer Robert Maguire, will also testify that Pellicano wiretapped her husband during their divorce.

Federal prosecutors said they anticipate a 10-week trial which could see some 80-100 witnesses testify, per Variety. Pellicano is representing himself.

Pellicano was sentenced to jail time in 2003 after pleading guilty to possession of illegal weapons; he was released from prison in 2006 and then indicted on the wiretapping charges. He remains in federal custody.
