Pedigree Recall Linked to Salmonella Poisoning

The season of salmonella outbreaks is not over yet. The California Department of Public Health issued a statement Tuesday pulling certain bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites, the Associated Press reported. A few types of pet food sent to some Albertsons and Costco stores are targeted in the recall because of concerns about salmonella poisoning, the California Department of Public Health said Tuesday. The recalled variety is Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites,

Mars Petcare US of Franklin, Tenn., the maker of the pet food said in a statement that the possibly contaminated component that should have been held back was accidentally shipped to a Pedigree facility in Tracy. The component was used in about 100 nags of the food, which were distributed to Albertsons supermarkets in Southern California and to Costco stores statewide, said Dr. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health. The bags sold at Costco have lot numbers of 831BFCAT02 and 830DFCAT02. Both have “best by” dates of 7/2009.

No cases of illnesses have been reported yet.

Cases of infection with Salmonella from dry dog food were registered in 2006 and 2007. Almost 70 people, most of them living in the Northeast, were contaminated by dog food produced by Mars Petcare at its Pennsylvania plant. 40% of the people infected were children.

The pet owners should wash their hands immediately after handling pet food. Infants should be kept away from pet feeding areas and children shouldn’t be allowed to touch or eat pet foods, treats or supplements.
