A former Children’s Hospital Boston pediatrician accused last year of sexually abusing as many as 50 boys has consented that he will never again practice medicine in North Carolina or anywhere else again.
Under the agreement, Dr. Melvin D. Levine, 69, the former chief of ambulatory pediatrics at Children’s Hospital, will never seek to reinstate his medical license in North Carolina or anywhere else.
“Dr. Levine admits that the board has evidence to support the accusation that he conducted inappropriate examinations. The result of this agreement is that Dr. Levine will never be able to examine another patient or practice medicine anywhere in the world,” Thomas Mansfield, legal director of the North Carolina Medical Board, said.
According to a civil lawsuit filed in Suffolk Superior Court by Boston attorney Carmen Durso, Dr. Levine, “sexually assaulted, battered and abused” the plaintiff, identified in court papers as John Doe No. 5, during psychotherapy sessions at the hospital from 1980 and 1985, starting when the boy was 8.
"Levine, during his treatment sessions, under the guise of performing repeated but unnecessary physical examinations, sexually assaulted John No. 5, including numerous acts of genital fondling, masturbation, and other attempted and threatened acts of assault," the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit also accused Levine of having the same attitude towards six more boys who came to him for treatment in the 80s. None of the cases were proved in court.
Dr. Levine is the author of at least six books, including “A Mind At A Time,” a New York Bestseller, for which, he appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” He also helped found All Kinds of Minds, a nonprofit institute that studies learning.
