It has been a tough month for Paula Abdul. The Grammy Award-winning pop singer had trouble sleeping and was shaken by the case of an obsessed fan who, after stalking Abdul and waiting for her outside her Los Angeles home, committed suicide.
The 46-year-old singer, who won the Emmy Award two times for choreography, said she has been staying in different homes and hotels and hired a bodyguard to accompany her everywhere.
The obsessive fan, Paula Goodspeed, was an “American Idol” hopeful who turned into a stalker of Paula Abdul. She was found dead, apparently due to a drug overdose, in a vehicle outside the singer’s home in LA. The 30-year-old stalker was found dead on November 11. Police investigators said they found prescription pills along with Paula Abdul CDs and pictures in the suicidal fan’s car.
Since then, the singer hasn’t said a word about the event, but today opened up in an exclusive interview on "Good Morning America." She described how she felt after finding out about the tragic event as “devastating and tragic.” Abdul was filming Hollywood week for “American Idol” when the tragedy occurred.
“It's just been a very, very tough three weeks for me ... and for her [Goodspeed] family and for everyone involved,” the singer said in the interview. Abdul also said that the obsessive fan wrote her morbid letters in which she wrote that the “Idol” judge should die. The stalker had sent Abdul flowers before killing herself.
Goodspeed, 30, took her best shot at “American Idol” in 2005, but her off-key interpretation of “Proud Mary” was mocked by the contest’s judges. "Idol" judge Simon Cowell in particular scorned Goodspeed and told her that any artist on Earth couldn’t sing with that much metal inside his/her mouth. Cowell also said during the show that he saw a resemblance between Goodspeed and her idol Paula Abdul.
The singer also thanked her family and good friends for opening “their hearts and their doors” to her during this ordeal. She added that she intends to sell her house in Los Angeles and purchase another one somewhere else. Abdul criticized the “American Idol” staff that made public her address.
However, it’s not the first time Paula Abdul had stalker problems. Back in 1993, the singer was receiving letters every day from a man in prison. The detainee was telling her that he had 120 days left until leaving the prison, then 119, 118, and so on. The man had tattoos of Abdul all over his body. He remains in jail for the rest of his life after making a threat against the US President.
