Paul Simon offered his fans an early Valentine’s Day present. The 67-year-old legendary musician and the other half of the “Simon & Garfunkel” duo, Art Garfunkel, joined forces for an unexpected get-together in New York on Friday and performed three hits during the encore of Paul Simon’s gig at the freshly modernized Beacon Theater on the Upper West Side.
The occasional opponents sang together “The Sound of Silence,” “The Boxer” and “Old Friends” throughout their third appearance as an act since they wrapped up a reunion tour approximately four years ago. Art Garfunkel had just arrived from Florida when he entered the stage on Friday, as he played in Key Largo the night before. Moreover, he returned to perform in Fort Pierce the next night. Paul Simon continued his performance at the Beacon on Saturday.
The reopening of the famous Beacon Theater, whose interior and sound system were completely renovated, was attended by Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell, Jon Bon Jovi and wife Dorothea, Harvey Weinstein and Georgina Chapman, Rosie O’Donnell and Kelli Carpenter, Whoopi Goldberg, James Gandolfini, Robert Randolph, as well as Jimmy Fallon accompanied by his wife, Nancy Juvnonen.
Paul Simon held an assorted two-set show, combined evenly from classics such as “Slip Slidin’ Away,” “Graceland” and “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” and tracks from the artist’s luckless Broadway musical “The Capeman.” The musician also exposed more recent material, such as “Father and Daughter” and “Amulet,” which marks a collaboration between Simon and Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza.
