'Paul Blart' Repeats Box Office Success

With only two new wide releases, moviegoers couldn't get enough of "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" which kept its top spot at this weekend's box office.

For a second week in a row, Kevin James' comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," which cost only $26 million to make, nabbed the top spot earning another $21.5 million and boosting its totals to a whooping $64.8 million, well on its way to hit the $100 million landmark.

"It's just a very funny film," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony. "It's not only a great family film, it really is a film that everyone loves."

Falling shortly behind was another Sony release, "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans," the third installment of the "Underworld" series, which grossed $20.7 million. Rumored to have been slated for a straight-to-video release, the flick did pretty well, also considering its predecessors, the first "Underworld" film took in $21.8 million debut in 2003 while "Underworld: Evolution" earned $26.9 million three years later.

Slipping on the third position was Clint Eastwood's gritty suburban drama "Gran Torino," with $16 million. Last week, the movie earned $22.2 million.

Rounding up the top five were two box office veterans, "Hotel for Dogs" with $12.4 million and Oscar-nominated "Slumdog Millionaire" which jumped from the 10th place on the fifth with $10.5 million. The film is now at $56 million and is certain to become a $100 million hit.

The other fresh release of the weekend was the family fantasy "Inkheart," starring Brendan Fraser and Paul Bettany, which failed to reach double-digit millions in the crowded marketplace.

"Business is booming right now, but it's hard to say whether that carries over to this weekend," Warners distribution president Dan Fellman said.

Based on Cornelia Funke’s best-selling novel, "Inkheart" follows the adventures of a man, who can make any character or object from a book come to life, and his daughter in their quest to save his wife.
