According to the box-office tracking firm Media by Numbers, „Paul Blart: Mall Cop” grossed $33.8 million from tickets sale this past weekend. The Sony/Columbia movie overpassed last weekend’s champ, „Gran Torino.”
„Paul Blart: Mall Cop” tells the story of an unfortunate security guard who stops a crime ring. The movie appeared to have overcame the expectations and reached the top place at the box office.
Clint Eastwood’s „Gran Torino” grossed $22.2 million. The redepmtive story of a Korean War veteran released by Warner Bros., had been palying in a limited edition since the middle of December last year, but now it’s already in its second weekend of general release.
„Paul Blart” won the biggest amount of money and celebrity becuase it was designed to be seen by everyone. Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures Entertainment, stated that the movie was released as a story which can be enjoyed by all the family.
Media by Numbers President Paul Dergarabedian also said that the scarcity of the new comedy movies has left a “wide-open landscape” which “Paul Blart” filled it so easily. He added that this movie was the choice of the people who wanted to make fun of a character, and not with him.
Bruer announced that the movie was expected to raise almost $25 million, but the audience proved to be higher. He added that “Paul Blart” would probably gross $40 million at this moment, a thing that would be magnificent considering that it cost only $26 million to make it.
The next movies in top five at the box office were “My Bloody Valentine 3D,” “Notorious” and “Hotel for Dogs.”
