Paul Blart: Mall Cop, the limelight movie about a security agent played by the born-to-be-funny Kevin James, cashed in $32.8 million in its debut week climbing on the first position of the United States box office.
Actor Kevin James, also known for his role in The King of Queens, co-wrote and co-produced the film which evolves around a funny, fluffy security agent who ultimately manages to foil a crime ring that attacks the mall he had sworn to keep safe.
Sony/Columbia's Paul Blart: Mall Cop Blart knocked last week’s champ, Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, from the No. 1 spot, according to the box-office tracking firm Media by Numbers. Warner Bros’ Gran Torino recorded earning of about $22.2 million in its second week.
The top five was completed by three new releases.
Horror film My Bloody Valentine: 3D debuted at No.3 with $21.9 million. Notorious, a biopic about murdered rapper Notorious B.I.G. (real name Christopher Wallace), earned $21.5 million in its first week on the market and landed on No.4, while Paramount's comedy Hotel for Dogs cashed in an estimated $17.7 to take the fifth place.
It’s not hard to figure out why Paul Blart: Mall Cop won the competition. Although the economy is in crisis and the last thing people would care about is a mall, the movie about a mall’s security guard was everyone’s choice and the whole family can enjoy it.
It is worth mentioning that, on a per-screen basis, the week’s winner was actually Notorious B.I.G. because it played in half the theaters that were showing Mall Cop.
