Actor Patrick Swayze, who was briefly hospitalized for pneumonia almost two weeks ago, is resting safely in the comfort of his home after being discharged from a Los Angeles hospital on Friday.
“I am happy to announce that Patrick Swayze is home after a brief hospitalization for pneumonia,” his rep Annett Wolf was quoted by People as saying. She did not elaborate on Swayze’s health status but added he was resting in the company of his wife Lisa, 52.
Early last week, his mother Patsy Swayze said she had talked to him and he sounded “really upbeat and positive.”
The actor checked himself into the hospital on January 9, just hours before he was scheduled to make an appearance at a press conference to speak about his role in new crime drama “The Beast.”
The 56-year-old “Dirty Dancing” star, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer early last year, recently admitted that “he’s going through hell” due to this treatment. A while ago Swayze called reports about the severity of his condition exaggerated, but in the light of recent events it’s safe to say his immune system was weakened by chemotherapy.
Speaking from the hospital, the actor addressed negative rumors about his health saying “I am alive and plan on continuing to stay that way.”
Swayze said he became worried that he might have caught some sort of infection and just wanted to deal with it before it became a serious problem.
“I called my doctor and then went straight to the hospital and was immediately put on antibiotics,” the actor told People about his minor health setback.
Although sounding optimistic and brave, the actor told TV interviewer Barbara Walters that he may have only two more years to live.
“I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking,” said “The Beast” actor, who already outlived the average period of time patients live after being diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease.
In his harsh battle with the disease, the actor chose to maintain an active lifestyle, and keep on working in spite of the cancer. And what's most humbling is that the “Dirty Dancing” star only missed two days of work on the set of A&E's police drama “The Beast,” where he gave off “good” energy like nothing was wrong with him, co-star Travis Fimmel said. Moreover, Swayze even rejected painkillers that would have taken the edge off his performance on the show.
The show debuted to mixed reviews last week, but Swayze’s performance was appreciated by critics. The show’s makers are already considering a second season for the cop drama and are hopeful that Swayze will be well enough to shoot it.
Producer Bill Rotko was impressed with Swayze’s s positive work ethic as he did his job without complaining during the five-month long shoot, doing all of his stunts.
