Just after the glamorous Golden Globes award ceremony, Hollywood is again in mourning as another of its greatest stars, Patrick McGoohan, has passed away on January 13th. The actor, aged 80 at the time of death, died in Los Angeles after a short illness, according to the statement of film producer and McGoohan’s son-in-law, Cleve Landsberg.
Patrick McGoohan was of American origin, being born in the United States. However, the actor was raised in Ireland and England, and has had a broad and successful stage career. He made a name for himself in the British film and TV industry as he started work as the star of the 1960s television series Danger Man, which was renamed Secret Agent later on when it was exported to the United States.
Following his role on Danger Man, Patrick McGoohan proceeded to star in The Prisoner. Patrick McGoohan himself wrote and directed a few episodes of this cult classic. The actor also had a prominent role in Mel Gibson’s hit epic Braveheart, where he played Edward Longshanks. During his career, Patrick McGoohan earned two Emmy awards.
At one point in his career, Patrick McGoohan was offered the part of James Bond in Dr. No, one of the many movies of the highly popular movie franchise. His reason for refusal is widely known, as McGoohan said it may affect his favorite character, John Drake, from The Prisoner.
