After her sentence was cut in half due to "good behavior," Paris Hilton’s lawyers reportedly dropped plans to appeal her initial 45-day jail sentence.

Officials for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said on Thursday that the hotel heiress will have to spend just 23 days behind bars, under state guidelines that give inmates one day’s credit against their term for each day they serve, so long as they maintain good behavior.

"The Sheriff's Department is announcing today that Ms Hilton will do a minimum of 23 days in jail.

"The possibility that she will be processed in and out in a day is over. She will do her full time, minus 22 days because of a state jail policy encouraging good inmate behavior," a spokesman for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said.

A lawyer for the 26-year-old socialite notified Los Angeles County Superior Court that she was abandoning her appeal, said court spokeswoman Katherine Roberts.

As previously reported, Paris has until June 5 to report to the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood, California, where she will do her time at a “special needs housing unit," away from other inmates.

Paris’ mother, Kathy, defended her daughter via a statement read out by Barbara Walters on US TV show “The View.�

She said: "We can only hope that something positive will come from this. Hopefully, young people who look up to people like Paris can learn from this."
