Parents’ Organization Finds Britney Spears’s Lyrics Indecent

The Parents Television Council is warning parents all over the country about the Britney Spears song "If U Seek Amy" and it is urging radio stations not to broadcast it because the nonprofit organization finds its lyrics quite controversial and capable of violating the broadcast indecency law if aired between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

When said aloud quickly, the title produces a sound akin to a vulgarity, to spelling out the F-word, said PTC president Tim Winter. He also said that a misinterpretation of the lyrics is absolutely out of the question and that the song is definitely not about a girl named Amy.

The Parents Television Council was founded in 1995 and it is a nonpartisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment.

Britney’s new track is actually the third single from her new Jive album, “Circus.” Six top 40 stations have played "If You Seek Amy" in rotation this week, enough to place the track at No. 92 on the Billboard Pop 100 chart. The leader of the U.S. radio stations playing the song is WFLZ-Tampa, Fla., which has played it 19 times already.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prohibits indecent broadcasts between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but has no similar authority over cable therefore digitally "Amy" has sold 107,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
