On Monday, Palm released the latest version of its Treo handset, the 800w. It’s not the biggest change the company has ever brought with the launch of a new device, but it does however fix certain flaws of the previous editions, the Treo 700w and the 750w.
The obvious modiffication is that regarding the screen: it has been enlarged from 240-by-240 to 320-by-320. The smartphone measures 2.2 by 4.41 by 0.73 inches and weighs 5 ounces, coming in smaller and lighter than the older versions.
The 800w can connect to the Internet using Sprint’s high-speed EVDO Rev A network and 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi. The handset’s operating system is Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, it runs on a Qualcomm 400 Mhz processor and features a built-in GPS. The GPS is compatible with Sprint’s $9.99 a month Navigation service and also with the free services from Google and Microsoft: Maps and Live Search.
The device also has 170MB of memory, a 2-megapixel camera, as well as 8GB MicroSDHC memory card support. The 800w can be purchased starting today for the price of $249.99.
The new handset comes to enforce Palm’s stand on the already crowded smartphone market. The company has already launched a device that has been doing quite well, the Centro. Last month, it was announced that Palm was well on its way to shipping two million Centro smartphone units. The device features a 320×320 touch screen display, Palm OS 5.4.9, a 1.3 megapixel camera, 64MB of memory, Bluetooth 1.2 radio, microSD card slot and a removable 1150 mAh battery. The Centro is available through Sprint, AT&T and, more recently, through Verizon Wireless for the price of $99,99.
