Palm Inc.’s officials announced yesterday the company’s
expectances on the sales of their Centro smart phone, which are sure to cross
the two million unit barrier. The optimistic point of view is especially powered
by the company’s recent deal with Verizon Wireless, the second largest wireless operator in the United States,
according to which, Palm’s Centro will be available starting today in Verizon’s
network.
Asked about the estimate moment when the company will reach
its goal, Brodie Keast, Palm’s senior vice president of marketing said: ”We are
confident we will get there in 2008,” as quoted by the New York Times.
At this point, the Centro phone is available in the United
States through AT&T, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless for about $99,
depending on the sale strategy and seasonal discounts of each company. Verizon
will offer the phone for $100 on a two-year agreement. The monthly fee
requested by the company for its E-mail and Web service will be of $29.99.
The phone measures 4.2 inches high, 2.1 inches wide, and 0.7
inch thick, and it weighs a mere 4.2 ounces. It offers multiple features
and capabilities being powered by an XScale processor. It comes equipped with
128MB of ROM and 64MB of user-accessible RAM. The storage capacity can be
expanded through its SD card slot, which can handle cards up to 4 GB. Centro
has a touch screen capable to display 64K colors at 320 X 320 pixels and it
integrates also a 1.3 Megapixel camera with 2X digital zoom that can handle
video. According to Palm, Centro’s battery offers 3.5 hours of talk time.
According to Palm’s sales reports, close to one million
units have already been shipped out by the end of March. The Centro managed to
significantly boost Palm’s incomes, being one of the company’s biggest hits. One
of the main reasons for its success is the company’s policy of offering a
low-cost, consumer-oriented smart phone that manages to fulfill the general
market demands.
