Palm Centro is now unlocked for all U.S. customers, the smartphone producer unveiled on Monday. In addition to the Sprint, AT&T and Verizon Wireless variants, Palm now also offers a GSM version.
The Sunnyvale, California company also unveiled that as of Tuesday, Google Maps with My Location will be available on Centro, offering customers fast access to local maps and driving directions.
Google Maps with My Location will help users get directions and information fast and easy, based on their approximate location on the map.
My Location will include 30 of the United States’ major metropolitan areas, and information of other areas as well. In addition to that, it offers detailed driving directions and traffic estimates meant to help users avoid congestions, and much more.
Centro, which is the Palm’s fastest and lightest smartphone to date, and so far is available in 25 countries across the world.
The unlocked version can be purchased for $299 at http://www.palm.com/centro. For Google Maps enthusiasts, they will be able to download it starting June 24, free of charge.
In just months after its release, Palm managed to sell one million Palm Centros, and earlier this month they unveiled their expectations of reaching two million units sold, after they closed a deal with Verizon Wireless.
Moreover, as Brodie Keast, Palm’s senior vice president told The New York Times in an interview, that goal should be reached by the end of 2008.
Palm Centro comes with 128MB of RAM and 64MB of user-accessible RAM, it handles cards up to 4GB and offers 3.5 hours of talk time.
In addition to that, for QWERTY keyboard enthusiasts, Centrino will make messages easier and faster to type.
The Palm OS offers great functionality, making it simple to use. The smartphone uses Microsoft Direct Push Technology for delivery of Outlook email, as well as personal email (Gmail, AOL, Yahoo).
The phone’s success has had a lot to do with the company’s low-cost, consumer-oriented policy, which makes the phone meet customer demands.
