Sony’s redesigned PlayStation Portable is showing off some new features that Kazuo Hirai forgot or did not want to mention at this year’s E3.
Somehow Joystiq got their hands on a manual for the newly revamped PSP and there are some interesting new features that have emerged from that delightful experience: for example, Sony has doubled the amount of RAM for its craved handheld and has added the charge-over-USB feature. This will probably be addressed by a later firmware update.
Although the RAM has been doubled (which should allow for faster games loading) there is still no indication that the console’s CPU speed has been increased. Original remotes for the PSP won’t work with the slimmer version and despite having the option of plugging a Bravia LCD to the tiny gadget, Sony has apparently forgotten to include an AV cable with it…
Other than that it’s the same 1200mAh battery announced during E3, but which has the same overall runtime as the actual 1800mAh battery.
The new PSP is a sleeker and more streamlined version of the popular portable gaming console, 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer than the current version, making the all-in-one mobile entertainment system even more convenient to carry around at less than 1/2-pound in weight and less than 3/4-inch in thickness.
The revamped version of PSP will come out in September, in two flavors: “Piano Black” and Core Pack. In addition to those, Sony prepared two new Collectors’ Edition: “ Ice Silver” PSP, which will be included in the Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack in September; and a limited edition “Ceramic White” PSP, including a Darth Vader silk screen on the unit, which will be featured in the Star Wars Battlefront PSP Entertainment Pack launching in October.
