Comedic actor Owen Wilson made a brave public appearance Thursday at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest movie, “The Darjeeling Limited,” his first since a suicide attempt in late August.
The 38-year-old actor faced the cameras and cheering fans Thursday at the premiere of his latest Hollywood project, “The Darjeeling Limited.” He was joined by fellow cast members Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Anjelica Houston, as well as director Wes Anderson.
Wilson and Anderson have collaborated on a number of movies over the past decade or so. “Bottle Rock” (1994), “the Royal Tenenbaums” (2001) and “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” (2004) are just a few of their projects.
The two artists’ screenplay for ‘The Royal Tenenbaums” earned them an Academy Award nomination.
Wilson currently stars alongside Schwartzman and Brody in Anderson-helmed film, “The Darjeeling Limited,” a fantasy about three brothers’ travel by train through India and their endeavor to reconnect with each other.
Before “Darjeeling” began, Anderson introduced his longtime friend and collaborator, Wilson, saying: “I've never made a movie without him and I hope I never have to.” Anderson also called the actor “my best friend.”
The premiere was held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences headquarters.
The cast also includes former collaborators Anjelica Huston and Bill Murray, as well as Amara Karan and Natalie Portman.
Owen was shown a lot of support and affection during his brief appearance yesterday. Angelica Houston, who has worked with him on the “Tenenbaums” and “Steve Zissou,” told People magazine “I have to say, I have a crush on Owen” and called him a “cool guy.”
Schwartzman was likewise effusive: “Owen is doing very well and he is with us tonight, and I love him,” he told People on the red carpet.
The blond-haired actor, much appreciated for his humor and his charisma, shocked friends, peers and fans alike with his suicide attempt in late August, as recorded by Los Angeles police. His brother, actor Luke Wilson found him just in time in his home and called an ambulance, thus saving his life.
Owen’s attorney said the actor had been taking anti-depressants at the time of the incident.
