The week started off on a rough note for 33 celebrity Twitters, after their accounts got hacked. Among the names anyone would recognize were those of President-elect Barack Obama, Britney Spears, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez, Fox News’ Bill O’Riley and others.
According to the Twitter blog, the incident is different from the one in the weekend, when 33 accounts have been affected by a phishing scam aimed at Twitter users. The celeb accounts targeted on Monday have been locked down and their controls have been restored to their owners.
So what exactly happened? The most talked about is probably the message on Rick Sanchez’s account that said: “I am high on crack right now might not be coming into to work today.” Sanchez later wrote that his account was indeed hacked.
According to Twitter, the Monday incident was provoked by an individual who hacked into the tools used by the Twitter Support Team to help users edit their email address associated with their account. “We consider this a very serious breach of security,” Twitter blog writes, informing that the support tools have been taken offline and we’ll be restored when they will be safe and secure.
This weekend, another attack targeting Twitter users attempted to convince them into revealing their account information, such as username and password, and that proved indeed successful in multiple cases.
The good news is that Twitter has been fast in responding to both situations, and is now looking into ways of stopping the incidents from happening again.
